Upcoming Training Info & Ideas
Some of us have been tossing around the idea of
having some formal training sessions of about 6 weeks in length. There
would be a fee to pay for the instructors and the facility. A lot of
details still need to be worked out. The idea is to have a class that
starts at a certain level and moves towards a definite end objective.
There are folks who are beyond basic obedience and agility and need to be able
to move on to the next level. With the way we have been doing things
everybody is staying at the beginner level because we are constantly having new
folks joining us at the beginner lever. Plus some people just like a more
structured environment. We will still have the informal training where we
help each other. This is still needed for those who don't like the formal
training or just aren't in the position to be able to attend on a weekly basis
but still want to get out with their dog. Barb and I are thinking about
offering a tracking class if we can get a location to hold it.
We will start back with the informal training on January 4th. I'll send a reminder note out closer to that time.

Thank you!
First off I would like to thanks those of you who
attended the parade and/or came to the Dec. meeting Christmas party. We
had a good time at both. Mandy already had ideas for how we could
decorate the truck next year. Margit posted pictures on Facebook.
We had a nice private room at Ryans so we didn't disturb other folks with our
game and meeting. ~ Beth

Upcoming Weekend Events! Dec 13th & 14th
This Saturday (December 13)is the Christmas
parade in West Plains. Line-up is at 1:00 and the parade starts at
4:00. From what Angela passed along when she signed us up, since we
aren't competing we can't line up until 1:00. Mike had gotten permission
for us to decorate behind All-Pet. So I'll be there with the my ton
flatbed truck. At 1 pm or shortly after I'll go over to Missouri Ave.
They told us to just line-up at the end of the line. Sounds like
they are trying to get the judged floats up front. If it is after 1 pm when
you get to town, give me a call and I'll let you know about where we are
at. We are going to decorate the truck. The sign will be on
front. We can hang garland, wreaths, etc. from the bed. If you have
something that would make some good decorations bring it with you and wire or
string to attach it to the truck. If you are going to ride on the bed
of the truck, you may want to bring something soft & warm to sit on.
It has a metal bed. The parade moves pretty fast and is about 1 1/4
miles long. Some of us will be decorating our dogs also. It sounds
like it is going to be a nice day.
Sunday is our Christmas party/December meeting. We will be meeting at Ryan's restaurant in West Plains at 1:00. It is on Hwy 160 west just past Wal-Mart. The business meeting will be short. We need to elect officers. We need a secretary and treasurer plus at least 1 board member. Please let Donna know if you are willing to serve. We will also be voting on change in the memberhsip dues for 2015. A proposal was made to keep active member dues the same but to increase non-active member dues to $20 for individual and $30 for family. To be considered active you need to come to a business meeting and help at an event once a quarter. If passed, all current members will pay active member dues in 2015. New members will pay the higher rate. In 2016 dues will be based on how active the member is. Membership dues are due in January. We will be playing the Dirty Santa Game. If you wish to participate, we suggested a gift of about $10 value. It can be a cool gift or a gag gift. That is part of the fun. Your family members are welcome to join us.
Those of you who are not members are welcome to join us at these events. We have lots of fun at both.
Hope to see you there.

Notes from the October Meeting
Arlene Myslinski was our guest speaker on Agility. She answered many questions. She suggested a group called
Canine Performance Events that we may want to contact to help us with our
agility show. They are interested in getting their events in the MO &
AR area.
Christmas parades - West Plains is Dec. 13th at 5:00 pm. We will have a trailer for folks to ride on. All Pets is going to allow us to decorate the trailer behind their store. I'll send out information on the time and theme as we get closer to the date. If somebody would like to be in charge of coordinating the decorations let me know. If you want to walk with your dog that is fine, just remember it goes at a fast pace. Quick poll - Do we want to enter the float in the competition? Let me know your opinion ASAP because it makes a difference on how much we pay to enter. The prize is worth the extra money, but it does take a lot of work to be competitive. Willow Springs parade is Dec. 6th starting at 10:00 am. This is a slower paced parade that would be good for walking with your dog. We will meet at Booster field at 9:00 am. Let me know if you will be participating in this parade.
Monday night training practices: We decided to make a change to when training will take place. There is concern about weather issues and driving at night in the winter. We have decided to try for the winter having the practices on Sunday afternoons starting at 2:00. For Nov. we will do the 2nd and 3rd Sunday (because I forgot to get anything out earlier). The rest of the winter we will go back to the 1st and 3rd Sunday. We will meet at Galloway Park. If somebody wants to check on other indoor locations go ahead. Let me know what you find out.
Dec. meeting/dinner - We decided to go to either Ryans & Coltons. Each place has advantages and disadvantages. We decided on Dec. 14th. if it is available. Mandy will get back to us on availability.

Haunting in the Hallow Update
For those of you who are going to help at Haunting
in the Hollow Oct 18th. The event runs from 2-6. They want us to be set up
by 1:30. If you can help set up, please meet me there in the parking lot
around 12. We need to carry stuff a fair distance. We'll try to
hook-up with the guy with the UTV to help us move things close.
We are going to do an obedience demonstration or do the drill team, depending on who shows up, at 3:00. The doggie costume contest will be at 5:00. Both activities will take place at our booth. We will do agility demonstrations through out the day.
Feel free to dress up yourself and your dog if you like. If you can't stay for the whole time, if you can make it for a few hours that would be great. We usually stay pretty busy at the booth.
Hope to see you Saturday, Beth.

Upcoming Agility Fun Match & RDO
Folks, The fun match & RDO is coming up on
Sept. 20th. The show is going to start at 9:30 and should be done around
3:00. It will be held in West Plains at the softball fields near the high
school. I'll send out directions later.
I'm needing to know who is going to be able to help that day. We will mostly need help setting up and taking down as well as people to rotate in the ring. It works best if there are 2 people helping at a time.
Also if you are coming and are bringing a purebred dog, let Amy know what breed you will have there. We are hoping to do a parade of breeds near the beginning of the match.
The other thing we are looking for are people to do demonstrations of an activity they do with their dog. If you have something different you do or know of somebody who does something interesting, let me know.
I would like to get everything lined out the 1st week of Sept. Please let me know if you can help by the end of this week. ~ Beth

Updated Future Activities: August - October 2014
Haunting in the Hollow is Oct. 18th. - We will have a spot again this
year. Those of you who do drill team or are interested in participating,
let me know if you would be available to do a demonstration at Haunting in the
Hollow. Let me know so Dave can put it on the schedule. We probably
need to have at least 4 people to have it look good.
Agility Fun Match and Responsible Dog Owner Day - It will Sept 20th with Oct 4th as the rain date. We will hold it at the softball fields near West Plains High School. Please start contacting folks with purebred dogs that are good representatives of their breed to see if they would be interested in being there so people can see their breed and learn about it. At this time we are planning on starting at 9:30. It will probably run until 3 or so. We are going to do this a little different this year. Instead of having all the demonstrations after the fun match, we are going to have a demonstration between each agility division. The parade of breeds will be near the beginning of the show.
NHC, a nursing home in West Plains, is having a "dog show" for the residents. They are inviting folks to bring puppies and well behaved adult dogs that would not mind being loved on by the residents. The are going to do this Friday, Aug. 22nd. starting at 2:30. If you would like to do this please contact Audry Sears at the nursing home. The number is 417-256-1088. They have done this before and it really cheers up the residents. So many of them miss their pets and enjoy getting to pet and see these dogs.
Incredible Dog Challenge at Purina Farms is Sept. 27th. We are planning a day trip to watch this event. This is the national finals. We had a great time last year. We will do a head count towards the end of Aug. to see who all wants to go. There is no cost to watch. We will car pool and just split the cost of gas. Last year we stopped in Rolla on the way home for dinner. There is food for sale at the event. It is a little high but not too bad. I think last year the event started around 10:00 am.

Old Time Music & Heritage Festival
This is a reminder that the festival is this coming Friday and Saturday. They have been promoting our demonstrations at 3:00 and 7:00. So we need to make sure we can put on some decent ones. At 3:00 we can do agility jumps with weaves. I would like to show them how they can get started and some dogs running a pattern. The pattern would be simple. At 7:00 we will do the drill team demonstration followed by rally and obedience. If you are uncomfortable talking in front of a crowd, I can do the announcing. If you have any suggestion on how to do the demonstrations let me know.
A few people have let me know when they can help but we need a lot more to man the booth and help with the demonstrations. So if you can help, please let me know ASAP. The times are 10-7 on Friday and 9-6 on Saturday. If you can do a couple hours that would be great. ~ Beth
Monday Night Practice & Drill Team Practice
Reminder we will be doing training Monday night. I'll try to bring the agility equipment but I'm not sure if I'll be able to. If I can't bring the equipment, we can play some obedience games with the dogs. We can meet at Galloway Park again.
We will do drill team practice afterwards. I would like us to go down to the area where we will be doing the demonstration to practice so we have a better idea on how much room we will have. If you are going to join us just for the drill team part, give me a holler before you come to make sure where we are at.
The weather is supposed to be good Monday evening. ~ Beth

Monday night fun time - June 2nd & 16th - Please let me (Beth) know by phone (417) 252-0349 or e-mail if you plan on coming. If you let me know you are coming, I can give you a call if we need to cancel. The weather for Monday is calling for scattered chances of rain. We can always drop into the pavilion if it starts to rain. Unless this changes to a good chance for thunderstorms we will be there. We will meet at Galloway park at 6:30. As always if you can't make it at 6:30 you are welcome to drop in when ever you can get there. We usually quit around 8:00. We would hold drill team practice towards the end.
Old Time Music Festival and Heritage Days - June 20 & 21. We will once again have a booth at the festival. We need to staff the booth on Friday from 10 -7 and Saturday from 9 - 6. Since vehicles have to be out of the booth area by 9 Friday morning, we will start setting up at 8:30. If 1 or 2 people can help that would be great. We don't have much heavy stuff. It would be good to have 2 people at the booth all the time. So if you can take a 2 hour shift that would be great. You can bring your dog as long as it is comfortable with crowds and little kids. Nearly everybody asked before petting the dogs, but there is always somebody who doesn't. If you think your dog might bite if surprised I would recommend leaving him home or bringing a crate for him to have a comfort zone.
For the display I was thinking of pictures of what we do and some responsible dog ownership information. If anybody has any other ideas let me know. Also I could use help with putting something together. Since I'll probably get pictures off the website, let me know if you don't what any pictures with you in it used. As far as info about the pictures, it will just be what is being done and the breed of dog.
We will be doing demonstrations at 3 and 7 on Friday. Nothing on Saturday. I'm thinking each should be 15-30 minutes long. We decided to do a drill team demonstration at the 7:00 time slot. If drill doesn't take that long we can fill-in with obedience or rally demonstration. We need to decide on what to do a 3pm. We will be in a grassy area with corral panels around the area. We can do a jumps with weaves demonstration. None of our contact equipment has been reworked to be usable yet. We can also do obedience and rally. We need volunteers for the demonstrations. Please let me know if you can participate.
Club meeting - June 24 Our regular meeting at Howell-Oregon starting at 7:00.~ Beth

May Meeting Info
Tuesday (27th) is our next club meeting. We need to discuss our plans for the Old Time Music and Heritage Festival on June 20 and 21. We will be staffing a booth both days again this year. We are scheduled to give demonstrations at 3pm and 7pm on Friday. They would like us to do the drill team demonstration. I told them that we may be able to do that at 7, but probably not at 3 because of folks working. I thought we could do rally, agility or obedience at 3. If you can't make the meeting, please let me know if you can staff the booth and/or help with a demonstration.
We had cooked hot dogs and sausages left over from the fund raiser. I have kept them frozen. I can bring them along with buns to our meeting. Let me know if you are interested in partaking and what topping (ketchup, mustard, etc.) If somebody else wants to bring other things to eat with them let me know.
Hope to see you there. ~ Beth

Monday 19th Practice Night Info
Next Monday is practice night. Folks have asked about starting to go to the park since the weather is nice. So we will be going to Gallloway park on the north end of town where we do Haunting in the Hollow. You get there by taking the road between the Ford and Toyota dealerships. Turn left at the stop sign. Go about 1 mile, the park is on the left.
I won't be able to make it that night. So Donna Christensen is going to take over organizing the activities. If you plan on attending please let Donna know. You can e-mail her at dchriste54@totalhighspeed.com or call/text 417-259-1325.
With everybody getting busy with outdoor stuff and other activities that come with summer, I realize not as many people may be able to make it on Monday night. So to save folks a wasted trip to West Plains, it is greatly appreciated if folks call to let us know they are coming. If it should be rainy we can contact you if we need to cancel. If those coming are from one end of the area or another, we may change the meeting place to a more central location for those coming.
See you at the monthly meeting. ~ Beth

Fundraiser May 2014
I want to thank everybody who was able to come help at our fundraiser at Town & Country Supermarket in Willow Springs. They gave us permission to use their cook trailer to setup a food stand for 4 hours. Eight members worked the stand and it wasn't long before we had an assembly line going. The profits will help toward our rental costs for the upcoming August 30th Breed/Obedience & Rally Fun Match at the West Plains Civic Center. ~ Beth

Fund Raiser & Monday Training Updates
Our fund raiser at Town & Country Supermarket in Willow Springs is
tomorrow. If you can help, we will be at the store at 9:30 to set up and
selling food until 2:00. If you can only come for a short time that would be
great also. I'm sure somebody will be ready for a break.
Monday is the 1st Monday of the month, so we will be training at Risner Stable in West Plains starting at 6:30. I'll be bringing the agility equipment. Besides some obedience, I would like us to do a little conformation practice. If you can't make it for the whole time, we will do conformation, obedience, then agility.

1st Monday of the Month
It's the 1st Monday of the month. We will be meeting at Risner stable at 6:30. Since we haven't done agility in awhile, I had a request to bring the equipment. Those of you working on obedience, we will do some obedience to start the practice. If you want you can continue to work on obedience while others are doing agility or you can start learning agility.
Drill team members - we will practice after. So if you can't make it at 6:30, please try to come around 7:45 - 8:00. We are usually done in 30 minutes. ~ Beth

We have a 5th Monday in March so that means training at Risner Stable. We'll get started around 6:30. Drill team practice will follow. It is not too late to join the group doing drill. We will do a short performance at the APRI dog show on April 26th. All exercises are on leash.
Just as a reminder we meet the 1st, 3rd and 5th Monday of the month.
Now that the weather is more suitable for hauling a trailer, we'll get back on the old schedule of obedience and rally practice on the 1st Monday and agility on the 3rd Monday. ~ Betg

Fund Raiser Postponed
Due
to the expected cold and rainy weather, we are postponing the fund raiser at
Town & Country. Based on past experience Steve did not think we would get
much business. I'm going to check on what shows are going on in April and May
and we will reschedule for an open date. ~ Beth
